The history of Department of Applied Foreign Languages, English Division

The five-year junior college program in the Department of Applied Foreign Languages, English division, was set up in August, 1995. The junior college was restructured into Jinwen Institute of Technology in August, 1998. In 2001, Applied English Department was set up, and started to recruit four-year and two-year program university students. By then, the five-year junior program no longer enrolled new students. In 2003, the Continuing Education program was set up and opened its doors to the two-year university evening program and in–service weekend program students.

On starting the Applied Foreign Language program in the junior college, Mr. Chang, the chairman, with the vision of globalization, had invested huge funds in recruiting foreign and domestic language teaching professionals, in addition to purchasing high quality audiovisual teaching equipment. With the excellent hard and soft equipment, it has allowed the creation of Americanized English learning environment, and has created the so called “Global Village”, which was well-known among the northern Institutes of Technology, and universities at the time. After years of great effort, the Applied Foreign Language Department has successfully built its great reputation and won the title as the north “Jinwen” and the south “Wen zao”, symbolizing its success in cultivating students with excellent English language ability.

In response to the social needs and in line with the government policy, the five-year junior program in 2002, and the two-year university program in 2005 had stopped to recruit new students. At present, there are three classes for each level, from freshmen to seniors in the four-year day program. As for the two-year program in the school of Continuing Education, there is one class each for the junior and senior level. In total, there are 14 classes in the Applied English Language program.

With the advances and effectiveness in the level of teaching personals, and advanced teaching equipments, the school has fulfilled the standards of technological universities and thus applied to be upgraded to university of science and technology. After the MOE evaluation, all sixteen departments and administrative units were ranked as top one level and thus the school was promoted and restructured as Jinwen University of Science and Technology in February 2007.

 

Educational Goal

Students are expected to learn well on the subjects as well as the hands-on experience in school. They will be mastering the English/Japanese skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. Students will be also equipped with professional knowledge in the fields of English/Japanese teaching, reception, and business administration.

1. English Division: Within the three modules, the Business Administration focuses on helping the students who set the goal of working in business administration for multinational organizations. English Teaching module will assist students to locate jobs in English learning organizations. The Reception Module will enable students to be recruited in the workplace, such hotels, airline companies, exhibitions, and airport.

2. Japanese Division: Students will be fluent in Japanese listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In more advanced learning, they will be skillful in Chinese-Japanese translation and may become a Japanese interpreter. The department will offer Japanese courses with a focus on business, along with humanities courses, to meet the needs in the business sector.

 

Features

1. Help teachers improve teaching material and ways to convey the instructions, and encourage them take part in teaching competition, to raise the teaching quality.

2. Improve students’ English skills, especially in writing.

3. Breed the talents in the fields of business, English teaching, and reception.

4. Increase the opportunities for students to participate in internship by cooperating with industries and English learning institutes.

5. Integrating license acquisition into courses, including general English proficiency, business English, international trade, conference and exhibition, foreign language tour guide, web design, and computer-related programs.

6. Encouraging overseas studies, extramural internships, and studying abroad for academic degrees.

7. Providing a variety of extensive training programs and creating an E-Learning environment, accessible anytime and anywhere through internet technology.

8. Providing services to allied schools, other schools, and schools in remote areas.

9. Providing services to local corporations and promoting cooperative research projects with business companies.
